Tainan - Nach einem Erdbeben im Süden Taiwans steigt die Zahl der Opfer weiter. Rettungskräfte suchten am Samstag in den Trümmern nach Verschütteten. Rund 500 Verletzte wurden in Krankenhäusern behandelt, wie die Behörden berichteten.

Die Erdstöße erreichten die Stärke 6,4 und überraschten die Menschen am frühen Morgen um kurz vor vier Uhr Ortszeit im Schlaf. Die Erdstöße überraschten die Menschen im Schlaf. Mehrere Häuser stürzten in Taiwan ein. In den Trümmern werden noch Menschen vermisst. Auch Superstar Madonna wurde erschreckt.

In der Zwei-Millionen-Metropole Tainan blieben die meist kleineren Häuser unbeschädigt, doch wurden mehrere höhere Häuser schwer beschädigt oder stürzten ein. Ein 16-stöckiges Wohngebäude kippte komplett auf die Seite. Die Behörden wollen untersuchen, ob es Probleme in der Baustruktur gab.

In dem Hochhaus waren 256 Menschen behördlich gemeldet. Fünf der Toten wurden dort gefunden, wie die taiwanesische Nachrichtenagentur CNA berichtete. Unter den Toten ist ein weiblicher Säugling, eine 40-jährige Frau und ein gleichaltriger Mann. Über 120 Menschen waren bis zum Morgen lebend aus dem Haus geborgen worden.

An einem anderen Ort in Tainan wurde eine 56-jährige Frau von einem herabfallenden Wassertank erschlagen, wie ein Mitarbeiter des Notfallzentrums der Deutschen Presse-Agentur berichtete.

Eine großangelegte Bergungsaktion ist angelaufen. Feuerwehr und Rettungskräfte waren zum Teil mit schwerem Gerät im Einsatz, um Verschütteten zu helfen. Es gab auch Unterbrechungen der Strom- und Wasserversorgung in der dicht besiedelten Gegend. Allein in südlich von Tainan gelegenen Stadt Kaohsiung leben 2,8 Millionen Menschen. Das Epizentrum des Erdbebens lag in Meinong nahe der Hafenstadt Kaohsiung.

Das Beben war auf der ganzen Insel zu spüren und überraschte auch Superstar Madonna und ihre Musiker, die auf ihrer Rebel Heart Tour in Taiwan sind. Ihr Manager Guy Oseary schrieb aus dem 350 Kilometer entfernt gelegenen Taipeh auf Instagram: „Erdbeben hier in Taipeh. Vier Uhr früh...Wir sind alle OK... Hoffe, dass es vorbei ist.“ Am Samstagabend ist ein zweites Konzert von Madonna in Taiwans Hauptstadt geplant.

Die Erdstöße geschahen nur einen Tag vor dem traditionellen chinesischen Neujahrsfest, das von Sonntag auf Montag beginnt. Sie weckten schlimme Erinnerungen an das Beben von 1999, als 2400 Menschen ums Leben kamen. Damals wurde eine Stärke von 7,3 erreicht.

Die Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahn wurde im Süden streckenweise gestoppt, um die Schienen auf Schäden zu untersuchen. Die Betreiber der Bahn rieten vorerst von Fahrten in den Süden ab, was die Reisewelle über die Ferientage zum größten chinesischen Familienfest behindern dürfte. Die normale Eisenbahn lief aber weiter, wenn auch mit verlangsamter Fahrt.
